You can claim deductions for your car expenses for travel directly from one work site to the next – when you have 2 jobs and travelling cost between is deductible.

You can claim deductions for your car expenses from home to work if you carry bulky tools and equipment – the equipment are required to use at work and, as long as there is no secure area provided to leave them on site.

You cannot claim a deduction for the cost of conventional clothing such as suits and normal work shirts or ‘oversized’ conventional clothing worn to conceal a protective vest or weapon while on plain-clothes duty.

You can claim deductions for the cost of purchasing compulsory uniforms and protective clothing – uniforms must have employer’s logo on. However, you cannot claim a deduction if these items have been provided free of charge by your employer.

You cannot claim a deduction for a pre-vocational course such as training to become a licensed security officer.

You can claim the cost for renewing licenses or certificates – such as any costs associated with renewing security licenses. But you cannot claim for obtaining the license or driver license.

You can claim home office expenses – such as electricity, heating and cooling costs if you can establish that you perform some of your duties or paper work from home. You can claim deduction using actual costs or the Commissioner’s reasonable rate of 45 cents an. You will need to show the average time spent weekly performing work-related duties in your home office to justify your claim.

You can claim the cost for training course – for example weapons training, negotiation training, first aid training, occupation health and safety. Deductions include course fees, books, stationery, internet connection, phone calls, tools and equipment, travelling to and from the course, also any accommodation required to stay overnight for the course.  

Work related tools and equipment and supplies: safety glasses, first aid kit/equipment, tool belt, computer, software, ammunition, bullet proof jackets, body armour, gauntlets, holsters, hand grips, hand cuffs, pouches, gun cleaning material.

You can claim the cost of insuring and repairing your tools and equipment to the extent that it relates to your employment

You can make an immediate claim for any safety equipment that is necessary for you to perform the duty

You can claim the cost for union, professional association membership fees – such as Australian Security Industry Association Limted. But this does not include the initial joining fees.
